Exodus 20:7
“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain

dictionary.com
in vain,
a. without effect or avail; to no purpose: to apologize in vain.
b. in an improper or irreverent manner: to take God's name in vain.

Its ever more prevelant in todays society and especially the youth. Even Yahoo has now added a catagory in their social section titled "OMG". According to the definition above it is using the Lords name in vain. There is no real heart felt purpose or reverence when it is spoken as it is in this format so is it not disrespectful of God to do so ?

Further more the commandment says not to take the "name" of the Lord in vain. With the oneness of the Christ does this commandment not now include the name of Jesus ? Is it right to proclaim "Jesus Christ" to convey a feeling of surprise or aw ?

What say ye ?

I get irritated when I hear people say OMG.  I usually say God had nothing to do with it.

You are right Brother but it is not just young people.

You say oh Dennis in a crowd, you catch my attention, I look around for the one saying my name.  I think  when we take the Lord's name in vain, he looks around, for the one calling His name.  He knows, the foolishness.

Thanks for posting, I pray it may open someones eyes to the seriousness of taking the Lord's name in vain

Sombody must have that old message from years and years ago about this very subject. Cant remember the title of it but it was basically that some words we say in trying to be Nice mean the same as if you actually said the word.

I cant remember either but I know what your talking about...I believe that.  It's not the word you use but the meaning behind it.  In the case of Gods name in vain, if the meaning is anything other than to Him, it is wrong.  JMO.  But seems its thrown around now days so disrespectfully that I sometimes just cringe when I hear it...

I hear even young children saying dam it, dang it, OMG, crap, etc.  no need to say more.   I think it is time for a good strong sermon on Words we say.

I have some friends who use OMG in texting, messaging, etc. Many of them think it simply stands for "o my gosh". But, my parents always told me not to use that terminology either because it means the same thing. Also, words such as dang and crap are simple slang for the "d" word and the "s" word. I will admit that occasionally I will utter the word crap because I have stumped a toe or something of that nature. And, I hear it from my peers practically every day. I do believe that it should not be said, however, and I regret when I slip and say it. I tend to use OMW, which simply means o my word, and I generally TRY to just say "ouch!" when stumping my toe. =)

Proverbs 6:2 I believe states that you are snared by the words of your mouth. I believe that it means not only having a bad attitude but that by saying things such as what you've listed above can cause spiritual harm to someone. It's very sad to hear of people saying "omg", especially when it's something so dumb. Like one of you say, I cringe at this, and I take it to heart. Someone is calling out to my Jesus and they are going about the wrong way.
