Okay...so I need to have a BIBLICAL definition of what gossip is. (Opinions are welcome also I guess...)

See, I don't want to gossip because I know it's wrong. So where is the "gossip line"? I don't want to cross it.

My best friend and I will talk about situations that are happening concerning us, but it has to do with other people also...is that gossip? We don't talk about our "situations" with anyone else just among ourselves.

So....GO!!!

Raquel

If your "situational" talk is designed to remedy the situation, then I would say its not gossip.

I think the word in scripture is backbiting 2 Corinthians 12:20 tospeak evil defamation so if you are speaking negative of someone even if it may be true it would be Gossip. As christians we are to be uplifting exhorting one another in love. We all gossip at differant points in ourlife but we should do our best not to speak negatively of others. The word gives us instruction as to how we are to deal with brothers and sisters that are having a strugle. And it is not talking about them or thier situation.

Gal 6:1

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

Gal 6:2

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Gal 6:3

For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.

Gossip = Rumor of a personal nature.

Gossipmonger = A person who passes on gossip.

Rumor = Unverified information.

So, if you understand it now, you should not spread "unverified information".  Talking about people is not a bad thing, it's just not a good thing to destroy someone because of what they do.  Especially if you know they sin.  I've found the best way to deal with personal situations is 1) Pray and leave it with God, and 2) Not to destroy a person's reputation on unverified information, but let the Lord deal with it in Church.

Prayer almost always gives rise to the Holy Spirit dealing with a person's doings by giving them the conscious revelation during a sermon.  Let the Lord take care of things you don't know about and if you see a person's fault's, (not sin), then it is best to end the conversation and remembering to love one another as you love yourself.

Thank you to everyone who replied to this topic. I have had trouble getting on PZ for the last YEAR, so I am just now being able to reply back. So sorry! :)

Although my friend and I never spoke badly of another person and never created rumors, shortly after creating this post, I felt convicted that we should not keep on speaking the way we were. I would not call our conversations gossip, but I felt that by talking about these situations, we were dwelling on the negative. As we all know...

Philippians 4:8-- Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever tings are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Dwelling on negative situations, although we may be trying to remedy them, is a hindrance to our relationships with God and others.

Anyhow, I thought I would just give y'all an update about this topic!

Raquel
